GM Updates

I do not have much news yet. Everyone must be too busy having fun. They had some bad weather to start with, but their tents stayed dry inside. I do know that Guider Alicia went to the CN tower and Casa Loma for her out-trip. Guider Leah went to Niagra Falls with 3 of our girls, one other girl went to the water slides.

If you are on Facebook, check out the Guiding Mosaic 2010 group page to see lots of conversations with parents and Guiders. There are also a lot of pictures there, some are put up by the GM group responsible for communication and some by participants.

Check these out:

The camp puts out a daily newsletter for the campers. I found the online edition. Check it out to see what the camp is up to. Several parents on the facebook site are printing these out for their girls to keep and scrapbook or at least keep as a "good copy".

Girl Guide Stamp

Canada Post has released a special stamp to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Girl Guides of Canada! The stamp was released on July 8, 2010 to coincide with the opening day of GM 2010.

An extra bonus for stamp collectors is that the collectible "first day cover" was actually canceled in Guelph. We plan to get one and frame it. Very cool! The stamps are available at the normal postal outlets so just ask for the Girl Guides of Canada stamps and use them on all your snail mail to celebrate our 100th anniversary.

Guelph - Here We Come!

Five girls and two leaders from our unit met up at the airport very early this morning to head off to GM 2010. The Manitoba contingent all traveled together in a chartered flight. It was so nice to see all the girls dressed in their Guiding uniforms and their GM camp windbreakers for the flight. The excitement was palpable even from a few sleepy faces at 5:30 am.

Good luck girls and have a wonderful time!

The Garden Party

On Saturday, July 3rd, Queen Elizabeth II was in Winnipeg for 6 hours. While she was here there was a Garden Party in her honor. We helped pass out cookies - three thousand of them! There was lots of praise from the event organizers about how how quickly the girls handed out the cookies and paper flags and how well they presented themselves, and how well they represented Guiding. When we were done that we were taken to a spot to stand for the for the royal walk-about. We all got to see the Queen and Prince Philip and she even said hello to one of our Pathfinders. The girls were fantastic in spite of the horrible heat and humidity that day. It was very exciting for all involved.

The Canada Cord Award

Congratulations to the three recipients of the Canada Cord from
The 212th Pathfinder Unit.

The girls have worked so hard to earn this award. Congratulations to all of you. You really deserve it.

On Saturday, girls from our unit received their Canada Cord Pin, ribbon and certificate at the Provincial Youth Award Ceremony. It was a nice ceremony with a very nice luncheon following. The girls were ceremoniously piped in and speeches were made. Introductions were followed by each girl receiving their Canada Cord Certificate and a flower while pictures of them over the past three years in Guiding were projected at the back of the stage. The Awards Day also included moving speeches and a few performances by girls.

In three years time we hope to be back watching them receive the Chief Commissoner's Gold Award.

We are so proud of you!

The Garage Sale

The Garage Sale was a success! We can't believe the generosity of people in giving us items to sell this weekend. We want to give a special thanks to G's family that hosted us and made their garage available to us. We want to offer our congratulations to G. who worked so hard to pull it all together and in doing this completed her third level Leadership Award.
The sale was a successful fundraiser in support of the trip this summer to GM 2010 camp.

Rainbow Camp

The camp was a weather themed camp and we experienced rain, wind, hail, and sunny weather all before the tents were set up on Friday.

Two girls finished their third year camps and did a fantastic job. We had four Guides join us and they were a great addition to our unit. They completed the experienced camper portion of the Guide program at this camp. We had one new Pathfinder who camped for her very first time and loved it.

The Pathfinders went exploring "New Paths" both as day hikes and night hikes. A major part of this camp was exploring different outdoor cooking methods, checking out tent performance and getting basic camping skills perfected. We participated in a variety of activities with the area camp form some crafts and wide games to a larger campfire and sing along. In the morning the girls recieved a huge number of pins, badges and awards. Congratulations to all of the girls!

E and J both completed the third year Camping Award at this camp. They both did an outstanding job and we are very proud of them.

Group Advancements

Wednesday evening was our Year End Advancement for the Members of Girl Guides who meet in our location.

The Pathfinders looked in some older Guide handbooks and were interested in how advancements were done in the past. They proposed that we do a multi-level advancement this year. One of the Pathfinders took on the job of coordinating the event as her third level event planner challenge.

The last year Sparks advanced into Brownies. The last year Brownies joined with the Guides and a few Guides advanced to Pathfinders.

When the Pathfinders were first enrolled they all lit candles from a single pillar candle. At the advancement the three third year Pathfinders each took an individual candle and together re-lit that same pillar candle. It was really lovely. They are considering becoming Rangers in the fall.

We set up the basement to look like an enchanted forest.. well... there were a few decorative trees mixed with a few artificial Christmas Trees but we have imaginations. The Brownies were kind enough to provide the refreshments.

Guider Alicia received her Pathfinder Leader enrollment pin. We all need to practice saying the new promise. We tried to recite it as a group and it was a bit tricky switching to the new wording.

Promise

I Promise to do my best,
To be true to myself, my beliefs and Canada
I will take action for a better world
And respect the Guiding Law

Lastly we were happy to give Guider Leslie and Guider Tracey each a bouquet of flowers and a card to thank them for their service as District Commissoners over the last 5 years.

Mother's Day Tea

Our tea was a success!

We didn't have huge crowds, but everyone who came seemed to enjoy relaxing, having treats, and enjoying each other's company. The shopping was pretty good too! The Girls and Leaders had a great time also.

We want to thank all the people that contributed their time and skills toward making this tea successful. It was a lot of work, but with so much wonderful support it was a very worthwhile experience.

One girl stated to her mother "I'm so proud of us!!". Girls, we are proud of you too!

We are Very Proud

Guider Alicia, Guider Linda, and Guider Cheryl were very happy to visit the legislature. Manitoba Guiding members were received by the Honourable Christine Melnick, Minister of Water Stewardship in her office, where we had a chance to meet with her and to share cake and punch. We then had a tour of the building and we listened to Question Period.

Were were very proud and honored to have a member's statement read celebrating the 100th anniversary of Girl Guides on Canada. We even received a standing ovation by the members of the legislature.
